3Buoys is a beach cottage available for rent from May through October.
It is located in the Village of Old Madaket on the West End of the
island of Nantucket.
There
is a tradition in Nantucket of naming cottages. We've named our
cottage "3Buoys" after our three sons. 3Buoys is located
at 41 Tennessee Avenue, a very quiet and private dirt road. It's also the
first street east of Hither Creek and it runs parallel to it. The "Creek" is
actually a navigable tidal waterway with boats moored in it, and
it flows into Madaket Harbor. 3Buoys is 100 yards from Hither Creek
up a grass path to 41Tennessee Avenue.
One of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the Island of Nantucket
is Madaket Beach and it is just three quarters of a mile from the 3Buoys cottage
-- an easy walk or bike ride down the Madaket Bike Path and close
enough to hear the sound of the surf. 3buoys is less than half a
mile from a calm, protected beach on Madaket Harbor.
The Madaket Bike Path runs from Madaket Beach all the way to downtown Nantucket -- about 6 miles. The Bike Path is just
0.2 miles up
a grassy path (a.k.a., "K Street") from the cottage.
Nantucket has excellent public transportation and there is a
shuttle bus
stop just up the street from the cottage, right on the Bike Path.
The shuttle bus runs on the half-hour from early in the morning until late
at night. You can even take your bike on the bus and visit the other
side of the island to explore.
The front porch is the perfect spot for watching the famous
Madaket sunsets. There is a covered breezeway between the house and
garage providing a shady sheltered seating area suitable for cocktails
or light dining. In addition the house is surrounded by a large
sunny yard with lots of trees and shrubs and features a small walled
garden with mature trumpet vines and hydrangeas.
The House
The house features newly refinished honey colored wide pine floors
and beautiful pine paneling in the main living areas. The cottage
has a new oil furnace and forced hot water baseboard heating. There
is also a glass enclosed brick fireplace. The house was renovated
in 2003 and features new lighting, freshly painted bedrooms with
charming stencils, in addition to new tile counters, and all new
appliances in the kitchen. The tiled bathroom was also updated with
bright new fixtures and flooring. The house was completely outfitted
with all-new china, flatware, linens and towels at that time and
continuously updated annually. The
yard includes a gas grill, picnic table and outdoor furniture.
Accommodations There are beds for 8 in three bedrooms. There is a full bath with
a glass-enclosed tub and shower with a large new white vanity and
sink. There is also an enclosed outside shower for washing off the
sand when you return from the beach. Two of the bedrooms have
high quality comfortable queen mattress and box spring sets with
decorative quilts. The bunkroom has two pine bunk beds with 4 twin mattresses. There are good-sized fans in each bedroom.
There is also a washer and electric dryer.
The Furnishings
Included in the rental are all linens and bedding, towels, including
beach towels and beach chairs. The kitchen is fully equipped with
all new (in 2003) appliances: microwave, refrigerator with icemaker,
dishwasher, electric stove and oven, coffeemaker and blender. The
living room has cable TV (including free premium channels) and a DVD
player. Both queen bedrooms have clock
radios. Free Comcast WiFi Broadband access. Free unlimited
phone calls to all of continental USA, Canada and Puerto Rico
Madaket
3Buoys
is located on the west side of Nantucket in "Old" Madaket,
which is approximately 5 miles from the center of town. Madaket is
known for its beautiful beaches, great fishing and the most gorgeous
sunsets on the island. It is the original fishing village of Nantucket.
Old Madaket is a geographically small area that runs along Hither
Creek and consists of about 300 Cape Cod-style cottages. There is
a laid-back quiet beachside community feeling in Old Madaket. It's "old" fashioned
in the nicest sense of the word.
There
are very few commercial establishments in Madaket. Other than a
small marina at the northern end of Hither Creek, there is only the
Westender, a small convenience market and a hot dog/clam stand. They are
only open during the summer season.
Madaket
Harbor is easily accessed from the town boat ramp, which is approximately
0.3 miles from the 3Buoys. This is the only boat ramp for trailerable
boats on the West End of the island. Hither Creek and Madaket Harbor
are perfect for kayaking and sailing small boats. Kayaks can also
be launched directly into Hither Creek from the path across from
side yard of 3Buoys. Bike and kayak rental companies on the island
will deliver to 3buoys.
